Samburu National Reserve
Samburu National Reserve is a distinctive northern Kenya safari destination shaped by dry savannah, rocky terrain and riverine vegetation along the Ewaso Nyiro, with elephants and specialised dryland wildlife adding to its character.

A landscape to read, not rush through.
Samburu National Reserve offers a noticeably different safari landscape from southern Kenya. Dry grassland, acacia scrub, rocky outcrops and the greener vegetation along the Ewaso Nyiro River create a striking northern setting for wildlife viewing.
The reserve is particularly associated with dryland wildlife including Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich. These five species are commonly grouped under the name Samburu Five. Elephants and other familiar safari wildlife also use the reserve and surrounding ecosystem.
Wildlife sightings remain completely natural and can never be guaranteed. The changing condition of the Ewaso Nyiro River, vegetation, weather and seasonal wildlife movements all influence what visitors may experience during a particular safari.

- July to October
- These are generally drier months in the Samburu region. Wildlife movements still vary naturally, but water sources and riverine areas can become especially important parts of the landscape during dry conditions.
- December to March
- This period is generally warm and relatively dry. Safari conditions can be good for exploring the reserve, although temperatures, water levels and wildlife distribution vary from year to year.
- April to June and November
- These periods are more associated with seasonal rainfall. The landscape may become greener, while showers and changing road conditions can affect individual game-drive routes and daily plans.
Samburu is reached by a substantial road journey from Nairobi and central Kenya. Transfer times vary according to the starting point, traffic, road conditions and stops along the way. Travellers combining Samburu with other safari regions should expect longer driving sectors than on a single-destination itinerary.
